Hydrangea

The ideas and images and paintings of this series of paintings has slowly been developing over the years and the idea first originated from noticing white Hydrangea flowers in the gardens and along the road edges of the road that heads out to the beachside town of Aramoana.

For me this road has always been a road of contemplation with its narrowness, sharp corners and the stunning seascapes forcing even the keenest of drivers to slow down. The journey along this road almost becomes the destination as much as the destination itself.
This series of works is ongoing.

Oil on hessian canvas mounted on two wooden panels.

Size: 950 x 1200 mm. (hxw) Diptych.
Private collection.

This is the first painting in the Hydrangea series of paintings.
This work was painted with a very limited range of 'colors' using only white, black and yellow ochre. These colors were painted over a solid red oxide background. Variances in the opacity ,thickness  and translucency of the upper paint layers mainly mid and upper tones, determines how the underlying red influences the colours.
