About myself.

I was first introduced to art when I was at high school and I'm not quite sure why but I was naturally attracted to the school art room and it was there that I discovered the compelling world of painting.

After studying visual design at University I worked for Chinese New Zealand Artist Wong Sing Tai, (aka Harry Wong), an Auckland based painter, and film-maker. Harry was a great role model for me in realising my own goal of becoming an artist.
Around 1995 I relocated to Port Chalmers near Dunedin, here I set up a small gallery/studio and where for the last 17 years or so I have been turning up at the studio and working as an artist ever since.

My prefered medium is oils purely because of its ability to retain opacity and depth of colour through the drying process, Recently I have been experimenting with acrylics for their quick drying qualities.

Many of the boat artworks have come about through working in collaboration with ceramic artist Dave Sharp.

For me the process of painting has always been a tricky business, you'd think I would have got the hang of it now, but the more I work the more I realize how little I really do know.
Over time my imagery has evolved into what are now deceptively complex arrangements and that there's the challenge I enjoy. Arranging compositional elements; lines, shapes and supporting/influencing them with colour and tone is where I'm currently at.
